OREA has called upon the provincial government to promote energy efficient housing by
strengthening existing energy conservation programs, not imposing mandatory energy audits every
time a house is sold.
OREAs submission is in response to a Private Members Bill that would establish a system of mandatory home energy audits for homeowners at the time of sale. While OREA supports the principles of environmental stewardship, energy conservation and consumer information, REALTORS® oppose mandatory home energy audits because they will make homeownership less affordable for low and moderate income Ontarians, seniors and first-time home buyers.
OREA instead favors the existing program of voluntary home energy audits which, to date, has proven
to be a considerable success.
